The Future of Conservatism: British-German Perspectives

Date: 19-21 April 2002

Location: Munich/Wildbad Kreuth

The conference, organized by the Institute for German Studies/Birmingham and the Hanns-Seidel Stiftung, will bring together 40 practitioners, academics and journalists from both countries to examine the future prospects of conservatism.

It compares notions of conservatism in both countries, focussing on the role of the state and European integration. A particular goal of the conference will be to ask if a new form of British-German conservatism can be identified to respond to the idea of the Third Way.

The main questions to be examined during the conference are:

  • Conservatism in Crisis?
  • Conservatism and the Individual
  • Conservatism and European Integration
  • Future Strategies of Conservative Parties
