Small Grants

To complement and support our research programme on ‘Creating sustainable growth in Europe’, the Foundation provides around £40,000 each year in small grants to meet the costs of research events such as conferences, seminars or workshops (or less commonly for small, self-contained research projects) addressing one or more of the core themes of the research programme.

The ceiling for these small grants is £4,000, or €6,000. Applications should be submitted by established researchers or practititioners at a UK or German institution, although the event coordination or administration work, or the field work for research projects, may be carried out by junior staff.

Because our aim is to impact on the policy discussion in UK and Germany, our project selection criteria go beyond those which apply to the funding of purely academic research and conferences. In addition to satisfying ourselves as to a project's academic soundness we ask questions such as:

  • Will it yield new comparative insights with useful policy implications in both countries?
  • Is there a convincing strategy for the communication and dissemination of results to appropriate target audiences?
  • Do the applicants have the required ability and experience in the area concerned?
  • Is the British/German dimension relevant and convincing?
  • Is the proposed programme (conferences, workshops, etc) or methodology (research projects) of a quality to produce the promised outcome?

We will require a report on the findings of the event or project which will be considered for publication and dissemination to our target audience in the policy community

Application procedures

If you think that your project fulfils our criteria, please contact the Director with a brief outline (rationale, description and cost estimate) of your proposal.

If your proposal falls within our remit and has a reasonable prospect of approval, we will send you an application form, together with further guidelines on its completion.

Applications for small grants may be made at any time, and we can usually give a response in principle within one month.
